Get over your fear of being photographed
It’s almost second nature to be self-critical. We nitpick at our hair, our face, our figure. The truth is, we’re hardest on ourselves. Others very easily see the beauty in us even though we have a hard time seeing it ourselves. Unfortunately, this often means that we put off taking images until we’ve lost those “last pounds,” or until our teeth are perfectly white, or until, until, until....
The problem with waiting until everything is “perfect” is that, well, nothing is ever perfect, so you might be waiting for a while to finally get those pictures taken. There’s always an excuse not to, especially if you have that mindset. I might be a little biased, but indefinitely postponing portraits means you’re missing out on meaningful photographs that you and your family will ultimately treasure as the years go by. To help you feel more comfortable during your next photo shoot, whenever it may be, here are a few pointers:
I’ve Got the Right Equipment to Make You Look Amazing
Did you know that cell phone cameras not only distort the way your face actually looks, but that selfies, in general, have lead to a rise in plastic surgeries? Even non-professional cameras are known for distorting facial proportions, and using on-camera flashes can lead to unflattering shadows. As a professional, I not only have the best professional camera and lighting equipment to make you look amazing, but I also know how to use them to pose you in the most flattering angles and light.
I’ll Tell You Exactly What to Do
Speaking of posing, so many people say something to the effect of, “I don’t know how to pose! I’m always so awkward! I hate every photo of myself!” Trust me when I say that you won’t have to think about how to pose, what to do with your hands, or how to stand. I will walk you through it all, and you’ll look incredible.
Treat Yourself — You Deserve It
They say that a good outfit can elevate your self-esteem, and I’ve seen it enough times to verify that this one’s the truth. Go shopping — with a friend whose opinion you trust — and treat yourself to an outfit that you look and feel amazing in. While you’re at it, schedule a hair appointment and a manicure within a week of your shoot. These tiny tweaks can make a major difference in how confident you feel in front of the camera.
You’ll Be So Glad You Took Them Years From Now
I’ve touched on this already, but it’s such a huge point that I feel deserves to be repeated. Years from now, you will be so glad that you had a professional photo session. You’ll look back on the day and think about how much fun you had, and get nostalgic about what that period in your life was like. If you still feel like you’re not ready to have your portrait taken now, do it anyway — not just for your future self, but for those you love. I guarantee, they will cherish your portraits.

Yvette is undeniably one of the best photographers I’ve ever worked with. She really captures the essence of the person she is photographing and I’ve enjoyed working with her.

The importance of having photos
If there’s one thing for certain in life, it’s that your to-do list is never-ending. From minor things, like doing the laundry, mailing that package, and getting to that doctor’s appointment, to major commitments, like planning a birthday party or heading out of town for a wedding; it can all be pretty exhausting. Amid it all, though, I argue that it’s important to take some time once every year or so, for yourself, and for your loved ones, to have your pictures taken. I admit I’m pretty partial to this notion, but here are seven reasons why it’s a good idea.
1) Things Change Really Quickly
Just as your baby can change dramatically in a matter of months, this rings true as your kids get older, as well. One day, their taking their first steps, then before you know it, they’re graduating high school. Adults grow and change just the same. Having beautiful photos of you and your loved ones during once-in-a-lifetime milestones, special occasions, and family events, may one day, be one day become more important than you could ever imagine.
2) It Presses Pause on a Period of Time
You know how when you smell a perfume or a certain food, it brings you back to a moment in time? Looking at a picture does the same thing. Not just in terms of the moment itself, but in terms of that period of your life.
3) You’ll Love Looking Back on the Images Later
Having images that document you and your family over time is unspeakably meaningful. You, your kids, your kids’ kids, and so forth, will love being able to look back at these images from throughout your life.
4) Professional Photos Are of a Certain Quality
Candid images you taken on your phone are super important (seriously — snap away and don’t stop!), but there’s nothing that compares to the high quality of professional images — especially images that are worthy of being prominently displayed as artwork in your home. After all, shouldn’t your home be decorated with beautiful images of your family, rather than just random quotes or floral arrangements?
5) You’ll Always Have a Fun Holiday Card to Send
Cheesy as it may sound, having a fun image of yourself and/or your kids to add to a Christmas, Easter, or Thanksgiving card, is always nice. And you know what? Loved ones enjoy seeing your face in the mail! On that note, photos also make great gifts year round.
6) It’s a Reason to Get Together
With all the chaos in our world, stopping everything to get together for an hour or two — looking your best and relaxing in a cool location — is a great way to spend an afternoon and forget about all the other stressors in your life.
7) The Actual Experience Can Be Super Meaningful
I talk a lot about looking at the images and enjoying them after the fact, but the actual session is meaningful, as well. It can be a true bonding experience for couples, small families, and large groups. Some even make the commitment to do images every year just for that reason.
